5.0 out of 5 stars Complete in every sense of the word, 19 Mar. 2012

This review is from: The Riverside Shakespeare (Hardcover)
The price of this volume makes it a purchase to be reflected upon but, in my opinion, it is well worth the money. The texts of all the plays are here, with explanatory footnotes, a scholarly introduction to the entire book and a worthwhile preface to each play. Unlike the Arden editions, the footnotes do not invade the text but nestle at the bottom of the page so neatly that they do not interrupt the pace of the drama. Yet the meaning of all the difficult or easily misunderstood words are given ("kind" meaning "affectionate", for example) as well as allusions such as "Ninus". It is therefore possible to read the texts without needing any other reference book. The editors are less obsessed with all the earlier variant sources than the editors of the Ardens and yet they give enough information for most of us. The volume is beautifully produced on quality paper with some illustrations - and made a wonderful retirement present to me after a career teaching English. I have treasured it ever since.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive edition, 19 April 2003
This review is from: The Riverside Shakespeare (Hardcover)
This is a marvellous collection, with helpful spacing, notes, and a useful introduction to each piece. There are excellent colour plates and a sizeable chunk of introductory history and context. Nothing is absent, and therefore nothing to complain about.
