This review is from: Traditional Indian Cookery (Paperback)
I bought this book on the basis of a recommendation by The Guardian, which listed it as one of the ten best books on curry. Unfortunately, it failed to live up to the advance billing. Perhaps Mr Santa Maria is a fine curry cook but his ability to explain what was required in plain language and in sufficient detail was woefully lacking. Part of the problem is that he has crammed in quite a few recipes at the expense of sufficient detail. For example, his chicken curry recipe (found of page 85 of my copy) contains exactly five lines of instructions remarkable only for being vague and unhelpful.A number of pages are wasted recounting stories about cooking, none of which are particularly entertaining and not at all helpful.

This is the curry recipe book equivalent of teaching someone to swim by tossing them into the deep end. Not everyone survives the experience. What I would have preferred to find would have been far fewer recipes, explained at some length and possibly with the aid of some drawings or photographs. I wanted this book to be a good one, having shelled out more than twelve quid for it but you would be better off surfing the web for recipes. They cannot possibly be worse than the ones in this book and they're free.
