3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but slightly disconcerting too, 5 Nov 2007
This review is from: A Fine Old Conflict (Paperback)
Just re-read this. I've enjoyed Jessica Mitford's books often, but at this reading it's hard not to despise upper-class Communists. Unlike their working-class comrades, the safety net seems to be always there for them. Jessica Mitford seems to know this, and deals with it by making little jokes about her own naivety. It leaves a certain bad taste behind.

She's also passingly honest about how Stalinism worked in the CPUSA, though I don't think Uncle Joe himself even gets a name-check. Even with the benefit of hindsight she doesn't seem to have found too much wrong with it, apart from the crushingly dull mode of speech and writing that comrades were required to use.
