I have finally finished reading this 5 months after purchasing it. Yes, it is dense, left-brained and quite a heavy read. I also attended Allan Schore's 2 day seminar on this book in London in October 2012, and this helped me to understand its contents even more. Wonderful scientific writing, proving what we always suspected - that, not only is the relationship key to good therapy, it creates the foundation of our right brain in infancy. Schore cannot emphasise enough how pivotal the first 18mos of life are in setting up our emotional health, our ability to form relationships, and our ability to self regulate. He deplores, with excellent scientific evidence, modern childrearing practices where mothers are encouraged to put their babies into day care (America) at 6 weeks old. He convincingly relates this to the prevelance of childhood, adolescent and adult mental illhealth, which seems to be reaching levels which undermine a safe society. He demonstrates that neurological connections cannot be made in the infant brain unless this loving mother-infant relationship works, and that the seat of real intelligence is in fact on our right brains. The later forming left brain can only influence the limbic system at very low levels of arousal, so showing the limitations of CBT.
A wonderful piece of work. Be patient and read it. It will influence how you practice therapy.
