5.0 out of 5 stars Neuroscience and therapeutic methods, 5 July 2011
This review is from: Changing Minds in Therapy: Emotion, Attachment, Trauma, and Neurobiology (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology) (Hardcover)
Margaret Wilkinson has shown how to apply the latest research discoveries in neuroscience to psychotherapeutic work of all kinds. Her insights can be used by any therapist working in the area of emotional wounding. The examples of work with patients are vivid and easy to follow, so that the reader feels that he or she can easily apply what they teach in a balanced, informed and emotionally attuned way. It really isn't necessary to understand all the technical references to the working of brain areas and neural pathways in order to benefit from reading this book. Although there is plenty of discussion of insights from psychoanalysis, you do not have to be a psychoanalyst to apply what is revealed here to your own therapeutic work in various fields. What is needed is some sympathy with attachment theory and infant development. Therapists in the helping professions will find the book deeply helpful and enlivening, because it offers ways of being effective, even in cases of deep emotional trauma. I'm not suggesting it is a text for "wild analysis", but rather, a ground breaking text for trained therapists. At the same time, people who do not work directly as therapists, but as teachers, nurses, helpers in institutions for offenders and in residential schools for emotionally fragile children, to name just a few, will gain insights that will deepen their understanding and effectiveness. I highly recommend this book.
Miranda Davies, retired child psychotherapist.
