This review is from: The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam Will Shape the Future (Paperback)
The whole Islamic world looks strikingly different from a Shia perspective, and Nasr's presentation of that view offers vast scope for fresh thinking. His book is so packed with insight that it took me a month to consume it. It puts the Shia into focus as an important religious minority, concerned with minority rights, and devoted more to justice than legalism. It is a faith born in protest against tyranny, which has therefore been treated as a treasonous heresy by most autocratic rulers of the Middle East. Nasr gives a detailed account of Shia fortunes in nations from Lebanon to India. In the process he powerfully challenges a host of misconceptions which commonly cloud our view of modern events. For example:

"Expecting to have more rights and powers under the emerging order, Shias have welcomed both the fall of Sunni domination and the rise of prospects for political change. This makes them in principle more likely to work with the United States. Greater democracy serves Shia interests across the region, and hence Shia revival is favorably disposed toward democratic change. The Shia universe of discourse is now the site of the entire Muslim world's most interesting and thorough debates about Islam's relationship with democracy and economic growth, and indeed about Islam's situation vis-a-vis modernity." (p. 179-180)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Discourse, 16 Mar. 2009
By

(REAL NAME)
The Shia Revival is an excellent account of history on age old conflicts within Islam. It is a nice independent resource on a subject which has attracted a diverse cross section of historians and think tanks all across the globe, especially after the fall of Saddam regime in Iraq. Writer gives a comprehensive discourse on the history of Shi'a suppression dating back from the time of death of Prophet of Islam, Umayyad- Abbasids era to the colonial powers' installed governments in Middle East and elsewhere. He quite beautifully sheds light on the instrumental rule of Saudi regime and co. In galvanizing sectarian insurgency through the witchcrafts of ladin-Zarqavi axis, an equal threat to their kingdoms too.
Author stops short of comprehending Ashura, an ultimate source of inspiration for revolutionaries of all times especially the shi'a. He declares Ashura a gesture of collective atonement- a statement highly influenced from the cultural facet not the ideology of shi'a Islam. On the whole this book can be treated as a rich reference on historical background of the conflicts within Islam.

A balanced book although there are some parts whose factuality can be disputed. I am sure Mr vali's book would be unacceptable to both the extremists in the Sunni community and staunch supporters of the Iran regime who find the ruling clerics there almost infallible. The ending parts seems bit ambitious as the Shiite Crescent is yet to realise and many developments contrary to his arguments have taken place since its publication. A must read for all nonetheless

5.0 out of 5 stars helpful analysis of a part of the Islamic world that is given not enough attention, 25 Jun. 2011
This review is from: The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam Will Shape the Future (Paperback)
A timely analysis of the modern history and current nature of the unfortunate division within Islam, that of the 1,400+ year old split between Sunnis and Shiites. A division existing from arguably the beginning of the faith with each sect viewing itself as the the right path. What this book also highlights is that this division is simply a manifestation of politics (read power).

I found this book a very valuable read. It is heavy on detail, at times the detail becomes a little onerous, but you just need to stick with it, as by the time you get to the end you will have a far greater understanding of the dynamics of the region than you could imagine. Every Western politician should be made read this book before uttering one word on the Middle East.
