4.0 out of 5 stars Very different editions
The review of this book entitled "Would have been nice if it were finished" is erroneous, it does NOT refer to the edition for sale on this page. It refers (accurately) to an earlier edition by the same author (Alexander Walker), published in 1972, with the slightly different title of 'STANLEY KUBRICK DIRECTS'. The advertised edition here for sale is called 'STANLEY...

2.0 out of 5 stars Would have been nice if it were finished
This book only goes up to 1971, merely halfway through the great director's career. It ends abruptly at 2001: A Space Odyssey. What is there is useful, but unfortunately it is missing almost three decades worth of films by Stanley Kubrick. There are also no colour pictures, but this is understandable due to the fact that only 2 of the films directed by Kubrick by that...

This review is from: Stanley Kubrick, Director (Paperback)
The review of this book entitled "Would have been nice if it were finished" is erroneous, it does NOT refer to the edition for sale on this page. It refers (accurately) to an earlier edition by the same author (Alexander Walker), published in 1972, with the slightly different title of 'STANLEY KUBRICK DIRECTS'. The advertised edition here for sale is called 'STANLEY KUBRICK, DIRECTOR', a small but important difference as it marks this out as Walker's "revised and expanded" edition, published in 1999 shortly after Stanley Kubrick's death. As such this book is fully comprehensive, covering all of the director's work, including his last film, 'Eyes Wide Shut'. It features many photographs, the vast majority of which are monochrome blow-ups of actual frames from SK's work. There are also a limited number of colour photographs in a section exploring SK's use of colour. Over the years I have read every book about Stanley Kubrick's work (available in the English language) and in my view this ranks up there alongside Michael Ciment's study as one of the very best. It is written in a clear lucid style and presents a thoughtful, well considered and stimulating analysis of SK's works.

What is there is useful, but unfortunately it is missing almost three decades worth of films by Stanley Kubrick. There are also no colour pictures, but this is understandable due to the fact that only 2 of the films directed by Kubrick by that time were not in black and white. While it may have been considered such at the time of its original publishing, three decades later this is not a comprehensive book by any means.
