3.0 out of 5 stars Book OK CDs less so, 11 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Recordings: For the Study of Orchestration: Enhanced Compact Discs (CD-ROM)
The Study of Orchestration book is excellent and takes you through all the aspects of orchestral playing that a budding composer may need. Unfortunately the accompanying CDs will drive you crazy because of the way they work. You have to load CD 6 before you can access material on other CDs. You have to listen to a short piece of orchestral music every time before you can get going - there is no way to bypass it. This is frustrating and annoying.

Apart from that gripe, the CD collection does contain a wealth of useful information about the playing techniques for the instuments of the orchestra. This is particularly helpful as it is impossible for anyone to play and understand all the instruments. It gives a good insight into the variety of ways music can be fashioned.

I still recommend the book and CDs but be prepared for some frustrating moments using the CDs.

1.0 out of 5 stars CDs don't work on new Macs, 23 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Recordings: For the Study of Orchestration: Enhanced Compact Discs (CD-ROM)
These CDs don't work on new Apple computers and when I say new, within the last 3 or 4 years. The CD says system 8.1 or later but when you put the CD in a modern Mac it says "Classic Environment no longer supported." The only way round it seems to be some complicated computing which is beyond me or to buy a new computer. At £90 it was a big waste of money and I hope that the seller responds at some point so I can get my money back. The publisher responded immediately, apologised and said that it needs updating but no news about when that might be. However, the book and workbook are very good so maybe the CDs are superfluous anyway.

1.0 out of 5 stars CDs not compatible with MAC OS X, 1 Feb. 2012

This review is from: Recordings: For the Study of Orchestration: Enhanced Compact Discs (CD-ROM)
I just recently bought the CDs and was very disappointed in discovering that they could not be installed on a MAC OSX program. I contacted W.W. Norton company and they said that it was only compatible with Snow Leopard 10.6 or earlier versions- which I doubt since I am using Snow Leopard 10.6....so I don't know...really disappointed- especially for such a product that is supposed to be high quality. They told me they were considering an update but did not know yet when....not so helpful...
