This review is from: The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen (Hardcover)
I have Grimms Fairy Tales in this series and cannot recommend them highly enough. They are beautiful hardbacks with embossed slipcovers and each volume contains an extensive introduction. The Andersen is split into five parts: Tales for Children; Tales for Adults; Biographies; Andersen's Readers; and Bibliography.

Each story is accompanied on every page by fascinating notes by Maria Tartar and drawings and paintings showcasing the artists that have created illustrations since Andersen first published his Fairy Tales in 1835. Artists include famous names such as W Heath Robinson, Edmund Dulac, Harry Clarke and Arthur Rackham.

If you are as fascinated as I am by the fairy stories you grew up with these volumes are for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful edition!, 15 Nov. 2010
This review is from: The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen (Hardcover)
I bought this edition as a present, but I am either not giving it away after all, or I'll buy myself another one! This book is just beautiful. It has good quality paper and a nice balance between illustrations, annotations and the actual stories. It is thick and heavy, and the illustrations are very elegant.
The annotations sometimes refer to coming-of-age themes. Perhaps this edition is therefore less suitable to read to small children, because they'll notice when you skip bits! If you think you can avoid uneasy questions or if you are not afraid of them, this is a book they will cherish and keep a lifetime.
