Richard J. Aldrich has edited one of the most compelling collections of diaries I have ever read. Witness to War has excerpts from all kinds of diaries; children, civilians, prisioners of war, resistance workers, and all types of military. Many entries are moving or funny, never boring. The book is put together with such heart, it is compelling, easy to read, and gives an excellent social and military history of WWII in Europe and the Middle East. Aldrich has edited the volume with skill, adding to its impact and its readability. I highly recommend this title.

The diary entries give a wonderful insight into the thoughts and experiences of ordinary people on both sides of the conflict, as well as those of politicians and ranking soldiers.
