4.0 out of 5 stars INSIGHT INTO A BORDER RAIDER, 17 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Wildwood Boys: A Novel (Hardcover)
The life of "Bloody Bill Anderson" - a great read! As in Blake's previous works there are momments of extreme violence, but surpisingly for the subject it appears less gratuitious in this novel. A mature work however. Its authentic folksy feel helps to bring the reader closer to Anderson's character. Slow pace to start with but the second half of the book romps home!

5.0 out of 5 stars roller coaster read, 24 Nov 2010
This review is from: Wildwood Boys (Paperback)
Never previously a great fan of western novels, except for McMurtry's 'Lonesome Dove' series, so it was a great pleasure to come across James Carlos Blake. This is the story of Will Anderson, his brothers and friends as horse thieves then 'bushwhackers' operating on the Missouri-Kansas border during the American Civil War. It is a story of the violence that intense loyalties can create. Anderson is a truly heroic figure: brave, loyal to his family and friends, fiercely independent but having to respond to a violent world not of his making - a tragedy that can only have one ending. The book is brilliantly written and if it wasn't for 'Ride With the Devil' which deals with the same period and, tangentially, some of the same characters, this novel would make an equally great film - in the right hands, of course. Reading this book wasted not one second!
