5.0 out of 5 stars The dark is rising
Susan Cooper's books are the sort that immediately cause people to say "But aren't those for kids?"

Technically, yes. So is "The Hobbit," for that matter. And Susan Cooper's "Dark is Rising Sequence" has joined the elite shelf of timeless books that are technically for kids, but not necessarily JUST for kids. With her use of myth and folklore, rich language,...

1.0 out of 5 stars With apologies to the book's fans, I have a very different view
Reading all the enthusiastic reviews, I am clearly out-numbered but give me a fair hearing and I will help you decide whether to buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as advertised, 15 Oct 2010
The book was advertised as used but in very good condition. The front cover of the book had a large obvious crease across the bottom right corner. The cover had been bent over. I cannot fault the delivery of the book, as it arrived next day by post.
Just disappointed the quality was not as good as advertised, as it was to be as a gift, but was not suitable to be given.

1.0 out of 5 stars An unoriginal pastiche, 23 Jun 1999
By A Customer
An unoriginal pastiche of Enid Blyton, C. S. Lewis and Mary Stewart. Every cliche you can think of about children on holiday in Cornwall getting involved with Merlin etc. Go to the original authors if you want a good original story. Here the cliches come so thick and fast it reads like an unconscious parody.
