Who'd have thought it? The books of H.P.Lovecraft are noted for their sublimation of fear of sex into the appearance of various tentacled monstrosities - great horror writing but the man clearly had a problem with women. Bizarrely, though, the cult of Lovecraft has spawned a tentacle porn sub-genre: endless images and stories of women ravished by giant cephalopods, the material principally from the US and Japan. Which is where 'Deep Blue' comes in. It mixes the tentacle porn sub-genre with English seaside smut, to frankly astonishing results. All the Aishling Morgan books are densely plotted and highly imaginative and original, but this, with octopus gods and mermaids galore, must take the prize. And yet it works - extremely well, in fact - with some superb sex scenes both in and out of the water. The usual Morgan gamut is there - spanking, humiliation, peculiar set pieces - so even those who don't like the taste of salt water with their porn will find something to enjoy. And for those who *do*, this is a rare treat from a modern master.
