4.0 out of 5 stars Good Novelisation of Classic Miami Vice, 16 Jan 2011
This review is from: Razor's Edge (Miami vice) (Paperback)
"Razor's Edge" is the third book in Stephen Grave's series of Miami Vice episode novelisations. Based on the 1980s series, this novelisation is based on "Smuggler's Blues" and "Heart of Darkness".

Firstly, it is useful to note that these books do NOT follow the episodes as they are seen in the series; scenes are adapted and changed, or written completely differently-a good example is, at the end of the Smuggler's Blues, Grave presents his own adaptation of the caravan scene, which works very well, but is not the same as the episode.

That aside, Grave writes in a simple yet engrossing fashion, paying careful attention to the characters portrayed by the actors in the television series. He stays true to the style of Miami Vice, and his action scenes are very well written.

He pairs up the two episodes easily, and this creates an enjoyable read and a real tribute to the only cop show in the 1980s. My only criticism is the replacement of Lou Rodriguez with Martin Castillo; both lieutenants were rather different in character, and it does detract from the storyline slightly.

Overall, an excellent tribute to Miami Vice, although do not read expecting it to be the same as the episode; Stephen Grave does it his own way.

The complete Miami Vice novelisation series consists of:

1. Florida Burn (Miami vice)
(based on the pilot episode, "My Brother's Keeper")

2. Vengeance Game (Miami vice)
(based on "Calderone's Demise, Parts 1 and 2." ( otherwise known as "Cool Running" and "Calderone's Demise")

3. Razor's Edge (Miami vice)
(based on "Heart of Darkness" and "Smuggler's Blues"

4. China White (not available on Amazon)
(based on "Score" and "Golden Triangle"

5. Probing by Fire (Miami vice)
(based on "Back in the World" and "Stone's War")

6. Hellhole (not available on Amazon)
(based on "Walk Alone" and "Shadow in the Dark").
