5.0 out of 5 stars Charming story set in India., 12 May 2012

The Marriage Bureau for Rich People goes from strength to strength but Mr Ali's home is threatened with demolition by a road widening scheme and he seems likely to fall out with his fellow Muslims when a new Imam is installed at the local mosque. Mr Ali only goes to the mosque twice a year but his friends and relatives are influenced by the Imam about what Mr Ali considers to be a personal family matter.

Pari - a widowed relative - has an adopted son, Vasu, who is a Hindu. He looks like becoming a pawn in a political wrangle. The local Hindus do not think he should be brought up by a Muslim as a Hindu and the Muslims want him to give up his Hindu faith and become a Muslim. It is going to test everyone's tact and patience to the limit to extricate Mr and Mrs Ali from this fraught situation without bloodshed.

Mrs Ali feels besieged on all sides and has fallen out with her brother who will not speak to her husband even though they are good friends. She can see all she has worked for being destroyed and she is determined not to let it happen. I really enjoyed this book and I think it is probably the best book in the series so far. It is full of humour and quirky characters but at the same time it does not dodge the serious issues which plague people living in any country at any time.

I love the picture of life in India and the way Mr and Mrs Ali relate to their relatives and friends. There are several minor sub plots involving the clients of the Marriage Bureau which are amusing and thought provoking and show Mr Ali at his best. If you haven't tried this charming series yet then this would be a good one to start with. They don't need to be read in any order as there is enough information about previous events for the new reader to understand why events are happening as they are. I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series. The series started with The Marriage Bureau For Rich People

Because I am an American and live in the USA, it is difficult to find Farahad Zama's entire Marriage Bureau for Rich People series. I dicovered via the author's facebook page that he had written additions to the series that I wasn't aware of. Because of the lack of USA distribution, I share the books with a coworker that has fallen in love with the books too.

These books are best enjoyed in the order they are written. Each one builds on the previous and the enjoyment grows exponentially (yes, exponentially in Q1, not negative). I am also impressed that Mr. Zama is able to write these seemingly simple fictional stories while also adding in modern-day issues dealt with in the developed world. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you must not have read any of his books, but trust me...he doesn't get preachy. His books seem to have the central theme across the series of just living your life as a good person. I'm always sad to finish each book because I know I will have to wait for the next for many months...but I hope that others know the great writing that is coming out of the UK from Mr. Zama. So unique and poignant. Love these books!

I have read all of the books in this series and this one certainly does not disappoint. The readers interest is sustained with the introduction of some new characters as well as some old favourites. I look forward to new books being written by this great author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good read, 18 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Mrs Ali's Road To Happiness: Number 4 in series (Marriage Bureau For Rich People) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this episode. It's got deeper characterisation, and more dramatic tension than others in the series - all of which I hasten to say I also enjoyed reading. The snippets of information about Indian customs are more delicately introduced and I was genuinely interested in it all. Good job, Farahad!
