If you felt suspicious of certain doctor's practices, You may have been right all along. Dr. Mendelsohn does a very thorough job of exposing questionable practices and needless risks and why these are still around. His true greatness shines when he admits to his own doctoring business as usual and how he himself learned to do more with less (drugs, that is). In clear words he tells how much diagnostic value parental observation actually has and when to see a doctor urgently. If you have children or if you foresee to create bodies for them, or if you just know someone who would benefit from healthy advice, learn more and enjoy this classic. A true gift.

I am a chiropractor who believes supremely in natural health. I present each new parent or expecting mother with a complimentary copy of this book. It is a collection of excellent thoughts on healthy children and how to raise children to be healthy. Strongly recommend it to all young adults who have, or are going to have, children.

I had a private midwife during my pregnancy and my own doula by my side in the form of Dr Robert Mendelsohn's wonderful book.

He helped me believe in myself and my intuition that just knew that children aren't suicidal and can often handle sneezes and runny noses without rushing them to a doctor.

In a secret world that we non medical doctors are not allowed to enter, Dr Mendelsohn lifts the veil and gives us a peek warts and all to ultimately empower us and help us become independent thinkers. Bravo!

Dr. Mendelsohn is a pediatrician with great qualifications. His advice frees parents from taking their child to the doctor for every runny nose and fever. Way too many doctors listen to the symptoms and pull out their prescription pad for yet another round of pink liquids. Dr. Mendelsohn gives solid, down-to-earth advice parents can trust! A must read for any parent who doesn't want to feed their kids a regular diet of antibiotics. Also good anti-vaccination information.

Dr. Mendelsohn does a very thorough job of exposing questionable practices and needless risks amongst the medical profession (and why these are still around). He shines when he admits to his own doctoring practices and how he himself learned to do more with less drugs. In clear words he tells how much diagnostic value parental (and grandparental) observation actually has and when you really need to see a doctor, and when to see one urgently. If you have children or if you are having or plan to have children, learn more and enjoy this book. Some excellent anti vaccination advice. A great gift from Dr Mendelsohn. I highly recommend it.

TOP 50 REVIEWERon 19 September 2014
Written by the author of "Confessions of a Medical Heretic" (another don't miss), this is a wonderful, practical book on home treatment for common childhood illnesses and accidents and advice on when to get medical help. Excellent information on vaccination, asthma, earache, allergies and why it's wrong to treat pregnancy as if it were an illness. Great advice on questionable medical practices and attitudes.

Even though some policies mentioned appear to have changed (this book was written in the`80s), it covers important issues - many actually haven't really changed that much despite appearances (for example, breastfeeding is no longer frowned upon but most doctors nevertheless remain ignorant about actual breastfeeding.

This should be in every parent's library and everyone (non-parents too) should have both:

- "The Healing Power of Fever"

and

- "The Calcium Lie II", which is about many nutritional lies, not just the dangers of calcium

I have just finished reading this book. I have a nine year old and a nine month old child. I just cured my nine month old's 10th ear infection without the horrible side effects of the antibiotics from the previous nine. I grew up in a world of medicine and I am shocked to find that it is usually unneccessary. I am also terrified to continue with my daughter's vaccinations. I only hope that more parents find this book and start taking control over their child's health.

I was worried at first that the book might be out of date, but it is just as relevent today as ever! Please do not be put off by the date of publication. I have learned so much and calmed many of my fears as a new mother. There are some relevations that no doctor will ever tell you. Buy this book and you will be astounded.
Btw., the three star review of this book should be clarified. He DOES NOT recommend adding routinely whiskey to babies. He only recommends it in some instances as a pain relief, where he stresses that it will do less damage (if any) then a pain relief drug. It is only mentioned twice in his book and he does say how much to give. Please don't let that put you off buying this book, because it is a real eye opener and a gem!! I have many books about babies and health and this one is the best and most accurate. I feel so much reassured by his advice especially knowing that it comes from a pediatrician himself who's has over 30 years of experience and so have seen everything and has been there many times.

A must have for every parent, and don't wait until the baby's born. You'll be pressurised from an indoctrinated medical profession from the pre-natal stage, and boy, when that little bundle of joy is born they'll be cueing up to inject him or her with enough toxins to destroy the child's immune system for life.

Very practical and trustworthy, Dr Mendelsohn covers every eventuality and give wise guidance for every ill.

This book didn't really tell me anything I didn't know already. People got up in arms because the guy suggests giving alcohol to kids as pain relief, he's just saying that it has less crap in than commercial kids paracetamol products. The basic premise of the book is to keep your kids out of the docs because a) they can catch stuff when they are there and b) they will receive unnecessary treatment. He also says not to reduce your child's temp because it won't go above 105 degrees anyway due to the way our bodies deal with disease and infection... if your kid gets burnt their temp miight go higher than that also if they are poisoned but if it is just an infection it won't. I found that quite reassuring really...

If you are a breast-feeding, non vax, alternative therapy using parent to start with there won't be much in the book for you to learn anything new.
