5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous and poetic retelling of a great story!
This retelling of the Arthurian legend made me think of the evocative language that bards may have used to spin a tale in such a way that the impression the words leave remain with you years after the story is heard.
Throughout there is also a serious and intelligent attempt to understand how conceptions old gods of the north may have been integrated into...

This version is missing a whole character! I don't know why it was cut down in this way for the American market but trust me it makes a huge difference. What was a truly fantastic work has become just a good one.

Make sure you buy the proper series otherwise you are really missing out. The covers are different so it is easy to tell. The abstract black and white covers are the edited versions while the very colourful fantasy artwork covers are the unedited originals.

This is a really fantastic series and it's definitely worth buying.

This is a great series of books and I am very glad they have found their way to kindle as they are, sadly, very few and far between to get hold of in a hard copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on the time before Arthur, 28 July 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dragon and the Unicorn (Paperback)
Hard read but well worth the effort. This book gives an insight into the legends surrounding the origin of Merlin and his mentor. A serious read, but one that any fan of fantasy fiction and Arthurian legend should read. Mark Nelson

I bought this on Kindle after owning it in Hardback for many years - without a doubt the best Arthurian tale. Superb and well worth the Download prices.

Mr Attanasio has a superb back catalogue of books and I wait with anticipation for the Dominions of Irth series - The Dark Shore - The Shadoweater - Octoberland - please get them in Kindle Format ASAP!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, 14 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dragon and the Unicorn (Paperback)
This is an incredible book, and, after reading so many very similar retellings of the stories surrounding the Arthurian legends, it came as a delightful surprise. I've read it and re-read it many times, and don't think I'll ever tire of it.
