5.0 out of 5 stars A real science fiction high point, 12 April 2013
This review is from: A Plague of Demons (Paperback)
The two themes which dominate Keith Laumer's books that I have read are his technologies- Bolos, guns and so on, and a normal man overcoming an alien force, frequently by becoming some sort of super-being. The latter are always enjoyable, but not always great writing, rather simplistic, you might say.

This book combines all his themes, with a protective, secret organisation which has served man thoughout history, into a magnificently exciting spy/ invasion/ human victory novel. There are themes in this book that are used so many times elsewhere that, while it may not be the first in many cases, it certainly forms a point of inspiration. "They Live" is one film which may owe something to part of the premise. He throws ideas around so fast in this book, it reads as if he is completely out of control, and the result is a tremendously exciting ride, quite dazzling. Most modern writers would pack considerably less into a six hundred page book than Laumer crams in here; it feels like it could all burst out.

Not necessarily my favourite of his works, but probably the best of his that I've read.
