5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for childcare and teaching practitioners, 28 Mar 2005
This review is from: Teaching Young Children: Choices in Theory and Practice (Paperback)
Finally! - An inspirational breath of fresh air to practitioners who wish to enhance their own learning and are bored with the usual mundane level 4/5 early childhood teaching and childcare resources.
The book details a broad range of different teaching strategies, some of which practitioners can and probably already use to support and enhance young children's development. It reminds practitioners about the theories and research that lie behind their practical actions by analysing each technique in turn and marrying classroom theory with practical fact. It also looks at eleven 'specialised techniques' such as 'documenting' and 'problem solving' and provides theoretical background and guidance about how these can be used to support and enrich children's learning.
Each chapter has a similar layout that explains the techniques in detail, gives examples of recent research and considers the influences of development, culture, gender and ability. Each chapter has its own bibliography -allowing the reader to research particular areas of interest.
In the last chapter 'Building a strategic approach to teaching techniques', practitioners are encouraged to reflect on their own educational vision and teaching techniques by reviewing some of the well known approaches to care and education such as Reggio Emilia and Waldorf Schooling.
This is a brilliant book for childcare practitioners and teachers, but could also apply to anyone who works with young children, believes in life long learning and wants a good theoretical base for their CPD (continued personal development). It could also be an excellent training resource for childcare managers and trainers.
