Drawing on, and vastly expanding themes visited in some of his earlier books (for example Revolution in Judaea, Judaism on Trial, Early Rabbinic Writings), Hyam Maccoby secures the argument for Jesus as a Pharisee (which is emphatically not a dirty word). As so often, Maccoby’s book is redolent of the Talmudic scholarship which enhances the persuasiveness of his arguments. Jesus, situated in his first century Jewish milieu becomes a man of his times rather than the synthetic and otherworldly figure concocted by some of his followers.
