4.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant portrayal of youth work
This book is one of the most important books that any youth worker should own.
It examines the role of a youth worker by portraying the pre-concieved ideas of what youth work it and desceting them. It challenges ideas such a "Red Coats" and "Caretakers" as not being true youth work, and then proposes the theory of Informal Education.

3.0 out of 5 stars review of youth work by jeffs and smith
Having read this book I was dissapointed to find that the essays were based on what is wrong with the youth service. I was hoping for views on what good youthwork is, which I feel would be of much more use to workers, rather than a list of the shortcomings of some youthwork, which is apparent to most of us already. I felt it painted a poor picture of the youth service,...

Infact this book is best read with Jeffs and Smith's sister book "Informal Education" which looks into the history of youth work and the development of informal education.
Tony Jeffs and Mark Smith are extremely knowledgable in informal education and this history of youth work and have a lot to teach us.

3.0 out of 5 stars review of youth work by jeffs and smith, 2 Jan 2000

This review is from: Youth Work (Practical Social Work Series) (Paperback)
Having read this book I was dissapointed to find that the essays were based on what is wrong with the youth service. I was hoping for views on what good youthwork is, which I feel would be of much more use to workers, rather than a list of the shortcomings of some youthwork, which is apparent to most of us already. I felt it painted a poor picture of the youth service, and did much quality work a disservice. As the text dates from the late 80's, it may be that it is less relevant to the youth service of today; perhaps these complaints were justifiable in the late 80's, but I felt it did not accurateley portray the work carried out by the youth service today.

The book was exactly as described. Like nearly new, there wasn't a mark on the pages and the condition of the book was very good.
