You don't hear much about Richmal Crompton's William series these days - I don't think they're on the flipping National Curriculum or whatever it's called now. I discovered Master Brown in my local library nearly thirty years ago while at primary school and it's a love that's never deserted me.
Maybe the audiobooks would be a bit hard-going for children (or adults) that haven't had the pleasure of reading Crompton's originals. Part of the pleasure of William is the comfort blanket that wraps itself around you when you know each of her perfectly chosen words by heart.
Even so, Martin Jarvis brings these stories to life. His characterisations are spot on (Mrs. Bott is a true nouveau riche star)and the sheer joyous comedy will make you giggle like a schoolkid yourself. Even a boy from the 1930s seems timeless both on paper and CD in the hands of the masterful Crompton and Jarvis.

My ten year old boy has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and television has to be strictly limited. The 'Just William' series has filled that gap; he and I have read our way through twenty volumes of them in the last six months, and they are perfect medicine! Each chapter is self-contained, so doesn't require too much concentration; they are well-written, introducing him to many new words and complicated sentence structures, so I feel we are not wasting our time; he has begun comparing William's life throughout the series, and has developed a sense of the changes in British Social Life during the First Half of the Twentieth Century; and they are so funny they make us both laugh out loud. Just what the doctor ordered!

I have to say, these are my favourite audio books ever, she's a genius! The whole family (children from age 3-9) laugh out loud at William and the Outlaw's antics and listen to the stories over and over again. Highly recommended! The only downside to this purchase was the time it took to arrive, I bought the CD for a camping trip, but had to leave before the product arrived even though it had been ordered in plenty of time and the company said it would be on time when I enquired.

I love all the early William books and this is one of the funniest. It contains the story of William's revenge on the nasty neighbour, which i've been trying to get for a long time.
Brilliant fun, though I may have to part with it for a birthday present. However, I'll try to replace it ASAP.
