4.0 out of 5 stars 12 short stories from the darker side of chick-lit
This was Emily Perkins' first published book, and also the first one that I've read, and it shows promise without being compelling.

It is a collection of twelve short stories, most of them around 25 pages long, which predominantly centre around naive young women in love, or in relationships, in difficult or unusual ways. When I describe it like that it makes it...

This was Emily Perkins' first published book, and also the first one that I've read, and it shows promise without being compelling.

It is a collection of twelve short stories, most of them around 25 pages long, which predominantly centre around naive young women in love, or in relationships, in difficult or unusual ways. When I describe it like that it makes it sound like 'chick lit', which it is to an extent, but it also has a darker side- some of the protagonists are neurotic or even psychotic and happy endings are in short supply.

The stories all feel extremely personal and intimate, though I couldn't necessarily decide whether Emily Perkins was an excellent writer or simply baring her young soul and vulnerable thoughts about men in print form... I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say that it's the former.

A decent read, especially good if you want to read in bite-sized chunks, but not essential.
