5.0 out of 5 stars More Morse Of Course, 20 Mar. 2004

This review is from: The Third Inspector Morse Omnibus: "Last Bus to Woodstock", "Wench is Dead", "Jewel That Was Ours" (Paperback)
Whilst I am delighted at being able to obtain the first 12 Inspector Morse novels as omnibus editions I'm puzzled at the reason behind Pan books issuing these not in chronilogical order? However this the third in the series is a cracking set starting with the first ever Inspector Morse mystery, 'Last Bus To Woodstock'. This is typical Colin Dexter with clues aplenty but none of them what they seem at first glance. Morse naturally triumphs having been wrong footed on several occassions.
'The Wench Is Dead' (CWA Gold Dagger Award) is a very different crime novel with our hero solving a murder that took place almost 150 years previously. As if this were not enough Morse aided by the long suffering Lewis, achieves this feat from his hospital bed !
'The Jewel That Was Ours' was the first Inspector Morse novel to be adapted from the TV series screnplay and differs sklightly from the scren version but is all the better for that. Colin Dexter teases and intrigues his readers and a dictionary and classical reference books are as always a must. One of the joys of this book that one visits The Ashmolean Museum almost expecting to see 'The Wolvercote Tongue' forgetting that just like the eponymous hero Morse, it is merely a piece of fiction, but like the jewel, beautifully crafted.
3 Morse classics, all delightfully different, and everyone a page turner.

I directed the tv episode based on The Last Bus to Woodstock and so I have a special relationship with Inspector Morse. I greatly enjoy Colin Dexter's novels and as an Oxford graduate they are particularly fascinating although I dont remember murders occuring in the groves of academe with such alarming frequency!

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. Words somehow make the clues more significant when they're written rather than heard on the TV.
