Such a beautifully written book about a wonderful period in the life of an adventurous and resourceful lady. I tracked this book down having read of Wanda in the writings of Eric Newby as I was enchanted by their adventures and romance. I always thought he should have written more about his fabulous wife. For me, this should be a best-seller and well known. The descriptions of the village life as she grew up are delightful and engrossing. Her adaptation to change is brilliantly summed up in the incident where she learns to ride a bicycle at her first attempt in a situation of emergency. What a woman!

Having read and adored "Love and War in the Appenines" by Eric Newby, I came across this autobiography by his wife giving her background and telling her story of how they met and married. The first section about her childhood in Slovenia is rather pedestrian and only mildly interesting, but it gets better when her family is moved to Italy and she shows how the Italian people were taken in by Mussolini (and explains to me a great deal about what they see in Berlusconi!). Her description of life under German occupation and her work in helping the escaped British soldiers is genuinely fascinating.

An interesting read following on from her husband's book - Love and War in the Apennines bu Eric Newby, which is one of my favourite books, but she was not as good a writer as her husband.

A very good read from someone who has seen it done it and wrote honestly about her life Wanda tells it as it was

I read the whole book the day it arrived. It slotted in nicely between her husband's book, Love and war in the Apennines, and the less personal history of Italy which I have picked up over the years.

With the forced removal of some of the population of Italian Slovenia, it also led me to ponder on what could have happened in South Tyrol and Corsica, both of which I know well.

If you are a Newby fan this is an insight into how his wife fared during all his escapades. An interesting read.

As a long time fan of Eric Newby it was fascinating to hear Wanda's side of the same story

A great complement to Love and War in the Apennines by her husband, Eric Newby.
