4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Sci Fi, 12 Oct 1999
By A Customer
Human explorers investigating a low-tech planet get caught and discover the native's telepathic abilities. A wonderful read that I return to ever few years to remind myself what good sci fi should be. Lots of exploration, strange lands and creatures and an unexpected love story to boot!

4.0 out of 5 stars Early Vernor Vinge, 15 Mar 2007

This review is from: The Witling (Paperback)
This is an early Vernor Vinge novel dating back to 1976. Still very enjoyable and an excellent short read. It could have been written this year, the ideas and technology are not dated. The novel demonstrates many of the ideas that Vinge enlarged upon to create his later Hugo award winning novels. If you are been selective then read 'A fire upon the Deep' and 'A deepness in the Sky'. These are later novels where the author's technology themes and space-time concepts are more fully realised and fleshed out. Unlike other authors' work Vinge's novels can be read and enjoyed in isolation, although related, they do not form a continuing series. It was the Hugo award winning novels that got me started on Vernor Vinge and I would count him as my favourite sci-fi author, at least of the moment. This novel deals with a high-tech human society coming into first contact with a lower tech society. However, there are a few surprises that the human's had not bargained for. A good grounding and introduction to his later novels and also an excellent short sci-fi novel in it's own right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Early Vinge - but well worth reading, 28 Feb 2006

This review is from: The Witling (Paperback)
For years this was the only novel length work (almost the only work) I knew by Vernor Vinge. It is a fairly slight story - a variation of an ugly ducking theme set in a (somewhat mediaeval) world of teleports, but the twist Vinge puts on it, and his skill in engaging the reader makes it a very enjoyable read. It was enough to make me interested enough to try anything he wrote, even though I had to wait 15 or 20 years for most of it (maybe he had better distribution in the States).
