4.0 out of 5 stars The first Morse, the start of a long relationship
Having watched the new TV series Endeavour, I decided to re-read the Morse books. Whilst John Thaw and now Shaun Evans have brought the character off the page, I still love the books. Well worth going back to, or picking these up if you have seen the programmes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Really not sure
I suppose I decided to give the Morse novels a try having enjoyed. along with most of the population, the Morse TV series. Although the author cannot be blamed for this, this first novel in the series appeared so dated that I found it difficult to enjoy, Perhaps I will try a later novel and see if things improve. Also, Morse is a much darker character than the one I saw...

This is one of Dexter's first Morse novels where the characters were very much his and they hadn't, as yet, morphed into the characters from the television adaptations. Lewis was the older of the two, though his character is otherwise much the same and Morse drove his trusty Ford Lancia, he hadn't graduated into the Jaguar as yet. Morse was still surly and generally unpleasant but the relationship between the two is quite different to the one that you are used to seeing on television. If you have seen it on television that is! Morse is always worth a visit in its original form, especially in one of these earlier versions, even if it is only to sit back and list all the ways its different to the version you know!
