This neat and cheap book is an excellent primer for the highly detailed tome "The C++ Programming Language (4th Edition)" (TCPL) which Bjarne Stroustrup brings us as well as this book.

The style of this book is very much instructive, with practical examples and many references to deeper understanding material if one chooses to follow it all.

This book is not for an absolute beginner in programming, however, anyone with a grounding in programming whom wishes to learn C++ should add this book to their shelves and digest it. If you enjoy this then certainly the main TCPL edition will be right up your street.

Stroustrup also, as always, makes the read simple elegant and informative, his style is hard to beat in such technical fields, clear and concise he is able to make you see the way he wants you to see the information being presented, and it always seems so friendly, he's introducing you gently rather then educating by force.

All in all, a good primer for the larger book, and as ever its in the best style.

This is a great supplement to TC++PL4, it expands nicely on the tour in that book, providing just enough detail on language and technique. It has definitely helped my transition to C++11.

A very nice feature of the book is that it includes a summary with references to the parts of TC++PL4 from each chapter, making it very easy to expand on it's coverage where this is required or desired.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great short jump-start in C++ for the non-beginner, 8 Dec. 2014

This review is from: A Tour of C++ (C++ In-Depth) (Paperback)
A concise introduction to C++ and its standard library. In my opinion, it is well suited to:
- those who come from C *and* know at least one OO programming language;
- those who haven't used C++ in a while, and need to refresh or re-learn it, and also want to get up-to-speed with version 2011 of the language.

It may be suitable also for experienced OO programmers with no previous experience in C and C++, if they are willing to suffer a little. E.g. the author throws at us pointers, references, the subscript operator (and its overloading) and the "new" operator flat-out in chapter one, glossing over all the related details.

Studying the book, one gets enough to start using C++ 2011 in well under 200 pages, covering the essentials; as opposed to going through detailed tutorials and references that range in the thousand of pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to New Features of C++ 11, 4 Nov. 2014

This review is from: A Tour of C++ (C++ In-Depth) (Paperback)
A succinct guide to C++ 11. Plenty of signposts to deeper articles in the bigger book: Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++. This book is sufficiently light, the chapters short enough and the content so well-written that it's easy to pick up, read a chapter and return another time.

Difficult to read book. Stroustrup books are not easy; this one is by design concise and this makes it even more difficult to follow.

1.0 out of 5 stars Paperback not as described, 29 Oct. 2014

This review is from: A Tour of C++ (C++ In-Depth) (Paperback)
I would echo the review by "WebReg", that the paperback copy isn't an actual copy of the book but a version Amazon has printed out themselves. Much of each page is blank space (probably 1/2), and the text on each 'right' page is to close to the spine to read easily.
