This is a very comprehensive book of over 600 pages that was designed and written from the ground up for the present day digital photographer. The lead author, Katrin Eismann, has written several books on the subject and what is sometimes seen as the bible on the digital darkroom, or the out-of-camera processing and adjustment of the image leading up to the making of the print. Elements of that book are incorporated here in a substantially reduced form.

However, that element is used rather late in the process and there is much that precedes it from the choice of format, sensor resolution, and the broader equipment choice and then the more everyday, not the least of which is the exposure. You could of course just leave it to the camera but that is not necessarily almost going to be the best choice.

The book breaks the regime down very nicely and provides just enough information without entering into information overload. Eismann always seems to be able to do this rather well, but she is aided and abetted by her co-authors who were probably more involved in some sections than Eismann may have been. Writing by committee need not be a bad thing as the limitations of one can be infilled by another. It is often used in technical writing to good advantage, and certainly is here.

The book is almost up-to-date, having been released in 2011 so it will be a very good choice for the intermediate photographer, and possibly some on either side. It will therefore be better than something first written pre-digital and subsequently revised. There are plenty of photographs between its covers so it isn't a dry read and it is probably a book to which you will return several times.
