This review is from: Unix and Linux: Visual Quickstart Guide (Visual QuickStart Guides) (Paperback)
I actually borrowed this book from the library and was so impressed that I bought it. If you are new to Linux then at some point you will come across the command line - it is a must. This has absolutely everything that you need to get started and is so easy to understand and follow. You will be amazed at the information that you will find at the command line about your system and this book is useful for Linux/Unix based systems (I use it for Ubuntu). The book starts with basic commands you need to know such as changing directories (cd) and listing directories (ls) and progresses to working with compressed and encoded files towards the end of the book. It is well laid out teaching you the basics first before throwing you in at the deep end with "sudo" (root privileges) half way through the book. Each page is split in half with text on one side and the actual commands as they are being typed on the "screen" - so that you can actually see how it is done rather than just reading it and then hoping that you have read it correctly (that is the benefit of these visual quickstart books). At the end of the book there is a useful appendix which is a precis of all the commands and their flags (options). As with most PC/technical books the book is far superior to the kindle version - I could not imagine trying to use this on a kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book I wish I'd bought 12 months earlier!, 4 Sep 2012

This review is from: Unix and Linux: Visual Quickstart Guide (Visual QuickStart Guides) (Paperback)
I bought another very good Linux book, but it was way beyond my needs. I needed a book that hit the salient notes, and 'Unix and Linux' is that book I believe.

At around 380 pages, and with illustrations and boxes of text, it is (IMO) the perfect handbook for the beginner
coming into Linux who wants to get a foothold. Explanations are to the point, and give you what I regard as the right amount of detail, i.e. enough to work with.

And that's the point about this book, it is a hand on the tiller which allows you to get on with using your Linux Command Line, as opposed to getting lost in reams of knowledge which might be peripheral to your immediate requirements.

Of course, it's not just for the beginner, I suspect it is for the anyone who uses the Linux CL, and who has not mastered the lexicon of standard commands.

In sum, this is a top class book if you want a clear reference book on your table for learning Linux and doing a lot of mainstream functions.
