This book, if you have the nessecary background, is a fantastic introduction to the study of the universe. This being Basic Classical Mechanics, Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus. This is a much more theoretical text than most on astrononmy and astrophysics, which is a refreshing change. This book is HUGE, and full to the brim with useful equations, facts, theorems, definitions, lots of worked examples, plenty of problems to challenge you.

I believe this book should not lack in any personal library of people interested/involved in Astronomy. It is well written and very clear. The book covers a broad range of arguments and the detail level is in line and even more than enough with the declared goal (An introduction to modern astrophysics).

Covered all the topics of my second year Astrophysics module and is a recommended text for my 3rd year too. It's great, incredibly useful and mine was in good condition too :)

The book in this format feels like a waist of printing space.
The pages are extremmely thin and you get the feeling of handling a phone-list! Also the printing is more or less a A5 but its printed on something a bit smaller than a A4. The margins are huge (a huge waist of paper). Nonetheless, if you like to scribble on the margins of your books, there is plenty of space for that.
Durability is questionable under normal use.

Another thing that I noticed is that if there is a bit of humidity in your office (or place where you have the book) the pages start to become a with a bit of undulation!

The scientific quality of the book is not a subject here. In terms of content the book is awesome and very up to date. Probably the best introduction to the subject of astrophysics...

This is an excellent text book introducing all the essentials of modern astrophysics, in a clear and systematic way. I don't believe there is a better. I only don't give it five stars because astrophysics still does contain some extremely suspect ideas, notably Lindblad's epicycles and density wave theory. While the author's correctly flag density wave theory as hypothesis, I would not expect anyone with a mathematical background to replicate the mathematical errors these ideas contain.

This book is the most complete on the topic of modern astrophysics. It is almost like an astrophysical encyclopedia. It does contain everything on the good and understandable level. It also quite up-to-date with the current research. Calculations are basic but reflect the underlying physics. I have based my lectures on the stellar structure and evolution primarily on this book.
