...I've read in a very long time! Some of the technologies may be a bit dated but the core issues remain the same and this book is a timeless treasure. Anyone of us who has ever worked hard and under a lot of pressure can relate to the characters (which I found very well described). It's a real page-turner and you won't be able to put it down until you are done - a real thriller! All the technological background is explained very well so even the non-computer savvy folks can easily follow this exciting story.

Tracy Kidder has captured the heart and soul of the daunting task of making a technological marvel. The constraints of time, budgets, personalities, plus competitors breathing down their necks. It's a breathtaking ride as the team works to achieve a miracle, and bring their idea to birth.

This is an excellent first novel. It intertwines two stories, one from WW2 and the other from today. The author has a very nice turn of phrase and is clearly a good story teller. It is well worth the read.

Was recommended this book, and it was one of the best reads I have had in a long time. Great characterisation, well executed, and more to the point interesting.

I found this to be an enjoyable and fast moving account. I have a limited knowledge of computing but could follow easily all the going on's.

One of my favourite books. Very well written record of the development of a new computer. I really like Kidders style of writing.

this is well worth reading. a useful look at the state of then, now and how we've advanced. written for the non-techies (we can skip these bits :)), it's very readable and not too emotional, but still articulating effectively "the mushroom concept" and others; enlightening, frightening and worrying, all at the same time...

Outstanding book. Required reading for an MBA course on Organizational Behavior at Haas School of Business, U.C. Berkeley. Shows the personalities, the culture and the organization that would not have worked in many circumstances but at this time, in this place, succeeded. Note that the experiment was not reproduce-able.
