I am a big fan of Yosemite National Park and through this became interested in the work of Ansel Adams who has taken some of the most iconic images of the park. This book is part portfolio of his work, part biography and part technical manual of his techniques. It is a very good book. The book looks at twenty of what the author - who was a friend and assistant to Adams - considers.the best pictures and looks at what they show about Adams' life and work. There are lots of supporting pictures and for me the best thing that comes over is Adams love for the countryside an the people who inhabit it. His portraiture was quite new to me and is an added "extra" and all in all this is a definitive and great value book

I really like Ansel Adams and black and white photographic images. That said, it would seem I am in my element with this book... and I am.

I have read Ansel Adams biography. Its big but whlst Ansel was an excellent photographer he was not so hot on his prose and at times it was so easy to get bogged down in that tome. this book is smaller, well presented and written and compiled by a female assistant and it rocks (sic)

The images are beautiful and it covers not just Ansel's photography but his life and work for his own pleasure and government. I have read a lot of book recently about American photographers and like French painters they grouped together on projects and were friend. Having just finished a book on Dorathea Lange she states that she worked with Ansel and they were friends. This book goes into a little more detail and also has a fair bit about Ansel's relationship with Edward weston an his muse.

excellent stuff. Even if you never read it, the images of not just Ansel adam's work but of Lange and Weston also are eye catching.

Having recently visited the Ansel Adams exhibition in the maritime museum in Greenwich, I was interested to learn more about the man and his work, this book has a wonderful collection of his many stunning photographic compositions. I was fascinated to learn more about the character too, he was an interesting man and a real pioneer.

Having enjoyed Ansel Adams work since being introduced to his photographs in the 1960's I have added many of his books to my library. I found this book an excellent addition as the essays and information by Andrea Stillman complement the books I already have and fills in some unanswered questions I have had about his work and life.

Of all the various books I have on Ansel Adams whever written by him or others - this is the best. You can really get into his approach to photography and life in general.
