5.0 out of 5 stars The Forever Hero
I love this book, it is probably my favourite Modesitt has written. The story is about a 'Devilkid' picked up from a post apocalyptic world by humans who have come back to research Old Earth. The book charts his integration into the current society and his mission to restore Earth. The story is as always well crafted and the characters well rounded. A mixture of science...

A mixture of science fiction and epic adventure, this book bring in everything from starships to reforestation. My only quibble with this book (and all of Modesitt's) is his annoying tendancy to break up the narrative with essays however these are not so long as to be unforgivable. So all in all an excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic, intransigent "Modesitt" hero, 1 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Forever Hero (Paperback)
The Forever Hero was my first introduction to Modesitt. If you have never read Modesitt, but have read H. Beam Piper you will recognize the common traits of the protagonist. The uncommon man who does whatever it takes to reach his goal. He focuses, melds his enviroment to attain his goal and succeeds. Modesitt takes Piper's common man a little bit further, in the sense of accomplishing goals at any cost, irregardless of the collateral body count!
This book is actually a reissue of the original trilogy (Dawn For A Distant Earth/The Silent Warrior/In Endless Twilight), long out of print. I have been waiting to get my hands on it to reread it. Another iteration of this character type is seen in the Ecolitan series of books.
Since I gave the trilogy to someone long ago, I have been left rereading the Ecolitan series, now at last I will have this series to reread! Now all we need is for the Timediver/Timegod books to be reissued :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Overrated pulp, 4 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Forever Hero (Paperback)
Sorry - but this does not meet expected standards. This being the first major work by L.E. Modesitt, and the only one read by me, I sincerely hope that the experience has improved his writing skills. Unfortunately this has even appeared in reprint - and it is simply not worth it. The plot is flat, the protagonist is flatter and the "Universe" is a complete flat-land. After reading of the protagonists exceptional use of hand weapons described as "Crack! Crack! Crack!" three times on one page, I realize that this is about as exciting as it gets...
