5.0 out of 5 stars How much better could it be?, 30 April 2014
This review is from: Genesis: A Commentary (Hardcover)
Having used this for some study in chapter 32 my first impressions are that I doubt it could be much better! Although not an overlong commentary and Genesis being such a large book of the Bible it packs in a great deal of content. Each section of the text is divided up into subsections dealing with such things as the structure of the plot, keywords in the text, characterisation, typology and comparisons and contrasts (to name a few). Hence one is given a lot of background and scene setting before one gets onto the exegesis of the text (a fancy theological way of saying what the text means). The exegesis is very detailed and helpful and any translational difficulties are dealt with there or in one of the subsections preceding it. The verse by verse exegesis of the text is then followed by reflections on the text and any theological insights it gives us into the topics that have been covered. As such this gives it a very interesting approach for a commentary on Genesis and certainly makes it one of the most enjoyable ones to read. I'm looking forward to using this for further study as so far I have found it to be excellent. If you're going to get a good cross-section of commentaries on Genesis I highly recommend this, Calvin's excellent commentary in the Geneva series and Philip Eveson's, as that is excellent for an overviewing passages (although it also has much detail) in the Welwyn series by Evangelical Press .

This review is from: Genesis: A Commentary (Hardcover)
This is written in a refreshingly different style from the usual commentary, getting 'behind the scenes' on many of the incidents on which it comments.
