4.0 out of 5 stars Useful resource, 19 Jan 2009
This review is from: Esther (NIV Application Commentary S.) (Hardcover)
Esther's a challenging book...no mention of God, lots about the Jews, characters who aren't quite as straight forward as we'd like. If you're reading Esther out of interest's sake and want to go deeper into the text, or you're teaching on Esther, then this is a worthwhile resource to have.

Karen Jobes doesn't mess about with creating solutions to the puzzles of the text with fanciful notions of piety or simply baddies and goodies. Rather she responsibly handles the text and draws out the various themes running through the book in a very readable way, with the usual series application sections. The introduction is particularly good. But as with any commentary, don't just assume what she says is right - think about it!

Definitely worth having and should prove useful for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful book, 15 May 2011

The Book of Esther is one that I know little about. Feeling that I should refer to it from time to time in sermons, I purchased this commentary and thought I would "dip" into it from time to time. Instead I began to read it properly and felt it was providing a really good read! The story of Esther is fascinating anyway but the author has made it seem so relevant to today's world. As a result, I am preparing a series of sermons all about Esther.

This Commentary deserves more than five stars. Karen Jobes obviously knows and loves her subject very well indeed. I spent a year studying this Commentary (and a few others) on the Book of Esther for an in-depth sermon series, and appreciated Jobes' insights and familiarity with her matertial. I was blessed, and am grateful for what I learned from this Commentary. The NIV Application Bible format is also excellent. If you want a Commentary on the Book of Esther, buy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best in the NIVAC Series, 2 Sep 2010

Recommendations always depend on what criteria you are using.
For me, wanting an introductory - intermediate level commentary, of conservative evangelical perspective, for devotional use, this is spot on.
Very readable narrative style, a reasonable ammount of background, doesn't get bogged down in polemics with critical reviewers.
Well worthy of five stars.
