This is my desert island craft book. Indents of letterpress on a rough cardboard cover. Wobbly lined illustrations and photos of Purgatory's eclectic creations. Exquisite workmanship and original thought, that, thanks to Esther K. Smith's kindly tone, leaves you not weeping at your own inadequacy, but shot with starting pistol eagerness. It's exhilarating to be able to start immediately, as you will be able to take your Amazon invoice and fold the super easy, very satisfying, child winning "Instant Book". No glue required. It encourages not replication of another's work, but your own, unique journey in the book arts.

I didn't know anything about making books before reading 'how to make books' by Esther Smith. What I've liked most about this books is that there are some very simple techniques that allows everyone to be able to make books, from the very start of the book. They may be very simple ones, but I'm really pleased that I can follow the techniques. I find the books fascinating and have never thought about the various materials that you can make books with, such as fabrics and carpet tiles! There are step by step instructions, great pictures that explain each step and on each page the items you will need. If I've managed to make a book from this, then I think the instructions must be very good!!
I think more on the equipment would be helpful, but there are links to websites where you can find out more.

If you don't have a book on bookbinding then you may like this. It covers most types of basic binding. I don't think the drawn instructions are very clear.

If you already have books on bookbinding then you will find nothing new here.

the book: a fabulous design, engaging and spacious aesthetic. If, like me, you look for a book about making books that in itself is really beautifully designed and fabulously laid out, clear and full of good ideas, then this is just great! I have resisted buying a book about books cos I'm not going towards the papier mache end of book making but rather the fanzine kind of end. This book has lots of succinct and smart ideas and immediately makes you want to make a book. Fun!

I really really love this book. The projects are interesting and varied and the author is clear in her instructions. Some of the projects are a little dumbed down for my tastes but I think that's because I want to make books to be used rather than books to just look pretty on a shelf. It's not for total beginners either as there is very little on materials so I would perhaps partner this with Book Craft by Heather Weston.

I have found this book very useful and informative. The book tutorials are easy to follow with helpful diagrams and I have successfully been able to make several of the books. I am really pleased with this purchase and would definitely recommend 'How To Make Books' to anyone wanting to learn to make their own books, novice or expert.

I was introduced to this book whilst studying illustration at University and ca highly recommend it if you're interested in creating your own books.

Useful for beginners but be aware that the instructions are more illustrated than step-by-step.

Having looked for different books on how to make books, I settled on this one. Overall, it gave me a good starting point. I like the easy going style as it is almost like a friend talking to you.

I wish the drawings were not so stylised. It makes it somewhat harder to figure things out. Having said that, it is all I can moan about ;-)

It is a great little books which is easy to read and will give pleasure to trying out making books. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to have a go.
