Donald Macintyre provides a personal view of life at sea, fighting the U-boats as well as the storm-tossed Atlantic. He describes his most exciting encounters, balanced with the details of the hum-drum existence, as he escorted the convoy's which were so vital to Britain's war effort. Well written, Macintyre is not selfish in his narrative, but frequently extols the contributions of not only other individuals, but of the whole ship's company in their common purpose. He sympathises with those lost on all sides of the battle. Macintyre ends with his view of the future of war at sea, which is interesting as it was written back in 1956, and the world has changed greatly since then. Overall, an excellent book written with real feeling.

I found this a very worthwhile read about Capt.McIntyre's involvement in the Battle of the Atlantic and as a Merchant seafarer I would have been only to happy to have had his Escourt Group looking after me.If you are interested in the hard slog against the u boats this is essential reading
