5.0 out of 5 stars Uncovers the truth of the destruction of the monastery, 20 Jan. 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Cassino: Portrait Of A Battle (Cassell Military Paperbacks) (Paperback)
Well researched account of the bitter struggle for this Italian fortress during WW2. Written by a author who fought in the battle, he gives a balanced agument to why the famous Benedictine monastry was controversially destroyed by Allied bombers, as well as a detailed account of the hardships endured by all. It makes me want to go and visit the place now!!!!

Everybody has heard of Cassino, I knew it was hard won but never knew to what extent, the bravery and determination of the troops is incredible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Readable account of the battle that secured the breakthrough to Rome., 29 Aug. 2013
A fine account that examines the day by day grind to secure the Benedictine monastery and the road to Rome in 1944. The author looks at both the individual actions, and the larger political considerations that contributed to the costly victory. An excellent account, well paced and well informed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic and very readable classic, 14 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very well written account of the battles of Cassino and their wider context within the Italian campaign. Published in 1957 the book has a feeling of authenticity lacking in more recent histories. Mr Majdalany fought in Italy in 1944 and it shows. He writes in clear and very readable language. I came away from this book with a much clearer picture of the separate phases and the geography of the battle. The kindle edition has a few irritating typos and some maps would have been helpful - otherwise highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Portrait of a Battle, 7 Aug. 2013

A good read for anyone interested in military history; good for the general reader and the specialist alike. Having visited Monte Cassino an experience which helped the book to come alive. Could have had more mention of British involvement.
