5.0 out of 5 stars A commendable book., 12 April 2014
This review is from: In Flanders Fields: The Great War Seen from the Air, 1914-1918 (Mercatorfonds) (Hardcover)
This is a huge book with a large price tag. Not everyone's' cup of tea but if you have an interest in the Great War this is certainly one for your book shelf. It is basically hundreds of photos from the war from Flanders - mostly they are arial photos but there are lots of other photos too from the ground. Most of the photos are new to me and I have a lot of books. The book really comes into its own in the way that it explains what can be quite confusing photos. Many of the pictures have tracing paper overlays bound into the book that give positions of trenches and other features such as mine craters. Also, key features are explained using grid references. This really makes studying the photos much easier. The expanse of the photos really brings home the scale of events; the shadows of the soldiers training, the barbed wire, train wagons and buildings such as tank sheds all serve to remind the reader that there were millions of men on the ground down below. Full marks to the authors and publisher as they may have produced a landmark book.

Hundreds of aerial photographs of the Ypres Salient during The Great War, many with transparent overlays giving notes of the photographs.

A must for anyone particularly interested in this area during WW1.

A staggeringly comprehensive collection of maps and images as taken by pilots from both sides of the Front. This has really given me clear idea how to describe aerial combat views and recognisance images in my fictional work.
My partner has a great passion for maps so he's rather jealous that this amazing book is mine!

A fascinating book. Makes it clear that if GHQ did not know the conditions in which they sent men to fight it was just because they did not want to know. The RFC was part of the army.

A truly fantastic book. Great interpretation of photographs and the cross reference to thumbnail photos really helps to understand what you're looking at. Buy this along with the Panaromas books by Peter Barton and you'll have reference and reading material that will last for years.
