5.0 out of 5 stars Stimulating and fascinating., 22 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Kent: North East and East (Pevsner Architectural Guides) (Pevsner Architectural Guides: Buildings of England) (Hardcover)
Do not pick this book up with a view to glancing idly through its pages - you will very soon be hooked on all the detail of any buildings you thought you knew, and totally involved in reading about buildings you knew you did not now. An excellent purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A splendid addition to a splendid series, 3 Jan 2014

This review is from: Kent: North East and East (Pevsner Architectural Guides) (Pevsner Architectural Guides: Buildings of England) (Hardcover)
I have bought every edition of the Buildings of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland as they first appeared or as they have been revised into the new format currently published by the Yale University Press. (I already possess John Newman's earlier versions of the Kent volumes). He is a well-known and highly knowledgeable architectural writer, and his thumbnail sketches of towns, villages and major buildings are judicious and well-written. All in all, this latest edition is well up to the high standards set by the Buildings of England series. Would that there were similar volumes available relating to other countries in Europe and across the world - it's not just a patriotic matter for me. Mind you, I would not have the spare cash to buy them all!

'The Buildings of England' series is absolutely essential to anyone interested in architecture and buildings. The photographs are now all in colour and there are far more black and white prints and plans within the text. The second editions offer far more of a complete picture of a village than the first did. Wonderful.
