Prof. Kamen's book (or at least parts of it )should be made compulsory reading wherever future citizens receive a good education. First, it is good for any national to see himself reflected in the opinions of knowledgeable foreigners, and Prof. Kamen's knowledge of Spain is beyond doubt: Spain may be an extreme case of lack of objectivity, but one sees traces of it everywhere. Second, it is important to all of us that we understand that the roots of our national differences, which so often give rise to international conflicts, are to some extent constructs. Prof. Kamen will help the reader give national feelings their proper place.
