5.0 out of 5 stars The most thought provoking book I've read as a Muslim woman., 9 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Women and Gender in Islam: Historical Roots of a Modern Debate (Paperback)
As a Muslim woman Leila Ahmad's 'ethical' view of Islam spoke to me in a way that found instant recognition. Her ideas are controversial, no doubt about it and I don't necessarily agree with everything she says (a further study of some of her sources might settle a few concerns). Nevertheless this is a must read for everyone interested in Islam and in women's issues generally. It is of great value for disscussing our history from a perspective that dislodges preconcieved notions. It is provocative yet simple and lucid in its style. It speaks to you, it upsets you, it challenges you and it calms you - whatever - you cannot avoid the impact of this book.

This is an excellent text for readers researching the social and cultural impact Islam has on women and the many disparities found in written texts and what is actually practiced in Islamic societies. Ahmed's work is incisive, balanced and backed by indepth field research and ethnography.

A highly recommend this book to anyone, specially muslim women searching for the origins of veiling. It really helped me to understand and separate the real islam from practises that where inflitrated form other cultures.
