This review is from: Cambodian System of Writing and Beginning Reader with Drills and Glossary (Yale Language) (Paperback)
This book was published in 1970, five years before Cambodia was devastated by the Khmer Rouge and then punished by the US and its allies, as well as China, for having overthrown the Khmer Rouge regime. While this book introduces us to the Khmer language, it is also a fascinating glimpse into life in Cambodia before the Khmer Rouge period. Some of the vocabulary in this book is no longer used in daily speech, only in more formal Khmer, but it shows the closer links between Khmer and Thai in the past and the use of more elaborate speech patterns. Huffman's approach is methodical and quickly builds an understanding of the script and the key elements of Khmer grammar. The handwritten script used in the book is sometimes a little unclear in print, but there are very few errors and if you are diligent this book will give you an excellent grounding in Khmer. Not for the dabbler, this book is designed for the serious student. It will reward you admirably.
