French the ex cavalry officer is the subject for an excellent biography by the greatest military historian of our age. Holmes writes a warm lucid life of French who made his career in the Boer war only to have it come to an end when he was faced with industrial war at the battle of Ypres.
French is probably the most interesting soldier of that period, the diminutive warrior and womaniser, held in warm regard by his men who was the last Lord Lieutant of Ireland.
This is an updating of Holmes original biography from some time ago and benefits from unrivalled access to his subjects letters and papers. Holmes himself a former senior serving officer which gives him special insight in some of Frenchs decision making. Holmes writes warmly and kindly about French but that does not prevent him from some acute incisive comments about his subject. A great well written bio of a great man.
