I really enjoyed this collection of essays. It was the first non-novel by Gunn which I had read and it lived up to the standard of his fiction such as "The butcher's broom" and "The silver darlings".

Neil M. Gunn's book is a rather classic documentary on whisky. However, his personal thoughts and presentations are sometimes outdated regarding recent developments in the whisky industry. Gunn's general revelations and thoughts are sometimes verbose and tedious to read. Nevertheless, it is full of witty ideas and certainly of some interest to the real whisky enthusiast...
