5.0 out of 5 stars A 3D Movie Mogul, 9 Jun. 2009

This review is from: Korda: The Definitive Biography (Hardcover)
Reading this book put flesh on the bones of possibly the best movie producer Britain ever had. From his origins in the wilds of Hungary's Puszta. We follow Korda (and his brothers) as he flees europe ahead of the Nazi storm, to his memorial service in London, via Hollywood in its golden age. Through the authors eyes we see a man, part genius, part con man, who's personal story is almost as fabulous as the films that will stand as his immortal testament. If you love old movies, from the golden era this book will delight, amuse and sometimes shock you. I loved the book almost as much as I ultimately admired its subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Life, 28 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Korda: The Definitive Biography (Hardcover)
The expression `larger than life' is a rather hackneyed one, but it perfectly fits the personality of Sándor László Kellner aka Sir Alexander Korda, a wily, charismatic film director and producer from the time of the First World War until the mid-1950s.

Korda's life - both personal and financial - were as chaotic as his films. Some were tremendously successful, others were stinkeroos. Charles Drazin's biography of this charming charlatan is sometimes a bit wordy, causing the reader to think, `Who said that, about whom?' but that's a small criticism; Mr. Drazin has certainly cast his net wide for his research, which paints a very full portrait of this fascinating man who was highly adept at spending money which wasn't his.
