This review is from: Invitation to the Bible (Paperback)
This book as a fairly introductory book on Biblical interpretation, but has some quite compelling insights. In many ways, it challenges some of the Evangelical 'forensic' ways of defending the 'truth' claims of the Bible, making the point that the kinds of material contained within the Bible don't easily lend themselves to that approach. What is particularly refreshing is the way Barton sees no special threat emerging from academic approaches to the Bible. Even if much of what it contains can be explained, more or less, in quite human terms, the Bible transcends that in its witness of revelation throughout the history of a worshipping community. I felt that that was a very insightful way of viewing matters. It has a ring of truth about it. He also shows that the Bible is not as 'flat' as some people would have it. The literatures of the Bible are very different and he shows many exciting ways of approaching these genres; some will appeal to the intellect, as they are propositional; others more to the imagination, as they are narrative, and so on. The Bible can of course be read independently of this kind of help, but one can't help feeling that the devotional and academic study of the Bible will be enriched for many after reading books like this.
