5.0 out of 5 stars A great overview for those interested in psychology, 9 April 2013
This review is from: Brilliant Psychology: How to Understand Yourself and Other People (Brilliant Lifeskills) (Paperback)
In my view, you should definitely read this if you're thinking of studying psychology, or are in the early stages of learning the subject!

It gives an effective overview of the field of psychology in layman's terms. It is carefully thought through and very clear.

I think it should be available to all psychology students at the start of their studies. One of key strengths is how it explains the history of psychology - it brings the strands together nicely.
A great balance between science and clear explanation.

Overall I found it very insightful, and shows how each main area of psychological research contributes to building up the whole picture of human psychology. It explains clearly why psychologists have bothered to research certain areas of human experience, and puts everything into context.

In summary, I wish I'd had this available when I started my psychology degree!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fitting title, but this doesn't do it commercial justice, 1 Feb 2014

Many popular psychology books offer a host of interesting but useless tips you'll never actually use - this book, however, is full of tips you WILL find useful and use. My fear is that the title feels a little too pigeonholed and it might deter some potential customers. The book is full of practical and useful stuff that could be useful to anyone interested in the massive range of people skills covered.

In short it's a great book for parents, salespeople, managers, teachers, people looking for love, people dealing with difficult people, people going for interviews, people involved in advertising etc.

...my daughter and I had read Louise Deacons previous book, a guide for young people navigating their way through the maze of love, and I bought this on the strength of that first book.
Excellent read, thorough, well written, easily digestible, logical flow, I have bought a copy for a friend of mine who has just started her psychology studies, and she is finding it very valuable.

This is a fantastic overview of Psychology that would be really useful for those thinking of studying it. Though, it is not a textbook it is easy and enjoyable to read for anyone that is just interested in learning more about the subject and for getting an insight into yourself and others. (As in the subtitle!)

I really enjoyed the fact that every word is meaningful, there is no unnecessary waffling.

It has lots of great references to further reading and useful websites to help you explore yourself further.

I read it in one sitting and was sorry when it was over. I will definitely read it again for pleasure and personal growth.

A really useful and engaging text - would highly recommend this for revision for Paper 1 of the MRCPsych examination. It gives an accessible yet comprehensive overview of the work of influential psychologists and famous psychological experiments, a knowledge of which is essential for paper 1 and previously very difficult to come by in one text alone!
