5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book for non-bankers, 18 Dec 2006

I just moved to banking with non-banking background and found this book very useful. It is very easy to read and gives a good overview on all issues related to banking, starting from regulatory and ending with description of various financial products and their use. It was exactly the book I needed and I would recommend it to people in similar situation. I think it is also useful if you work in one area of banking to act as a reference book for products under the other area which you are not that familiar, for example Trade Finance products, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Read/Study, 3 Nov 2011
This review is from: Introduction to Banking (Paperback)
This book carefully and clearly explains what banking is, the different types of banks including central banks; characteristics of banking in different regions around the world; and various banking practices and instruments e.g. repos, syndicated loans etc. Where the book really comes into its own, I think, is in showing how a bank's balance sheet works and then outlining the various risks that a bank needs to manage and how banks manage risk.

This is the theory. As we've seen from the recent crisis (and many others before) the profit motive raised to the power of the greed factor and then multiplied by callous regulation gets in the way of proper banking. Every day it seems there's an article in a newspaper somewhere in the (developed) world of a bank on the brink. It's easy to be perplexed about what's going on. How can you have an opinion when you don't understand what a bank should be doing in the first place? That is where this book comes in. Good for both students and the layperson.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book - poor quality of the product I purchased, 1 July 2010
This review is from: Introduction to Banking (Paperback)
The book is very good; my disappointment comes from the fact that I ordered a book which was supposed to be in a very good condition - `like new` - and it came in a bad condition
